LTE vs WiMAX: Worldmax to Shut Down WiMAX 4G Network in Amsterdam

It appears WiMAX 4G is losing its hold in Europe. Yota's defection to LTE is a major blow and another WiMAX 4G provider in Holland is set to shut down its operation in the Netherlands by the end of July 2010. Worldmax, a Dutch WiMAX 4G operator has decided to terminate its operations due to opposition from the military.

Well, at least it's not a shift from WiMAX to LTE. Worldmax’s expansion outside Amsterdam was opposed by the Dutch military because the WiMAX network allegedly interferes with a satellite ground station.

However, there may be other reasons that forced Worldmax to cease its 4G operation. Factors like the lack of WiMAX devices or the availability of 3G service at reasonable prices make WiMAX 4G an unattractive wireless broadband solution.

So I guess this is a minor win for LTE in this WiMAX vs LTE rivalry. I doubt that LTE would also succeed in the Netherlands because the country has excellent DSL, cable and fiber broadband options, a lot of Wi-Fi networks, and HSDPA+ service at affordable rates. If LTE has a presence in the county then the demise Worldmax would be a more significant update to the ongoing LTE vs WiMAX competition.
